The first keynote of the EU Open Source Policy Summit 2024 announced
We are honoured to introduce our first keynote speaker, Mr. Amandeep Singh Gill, the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology at the United Nations. Mr. Gill has a distinguished career that includes leadership roles at the International Digital Health and Artificial Intelligence Research Collaborative (I-DAIR) and the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation. With a profound understanding of the digital landscape, he is one of the leading voices on open source AI and digital commons. In the upcoming weeks, we will unveil more of the plans for the Summit. The OpenForum Academy, Carnegie Mellon University, FGV Direito Rio, Keio University, TU Berlin and the United Nations University Centre for Policy Research are looking forward to the event that will cover the relationship of open source with digital infrastructures, intellectual property and patents, innovation, AI and liability. The Award Ceremony of the Basil Cousins Award will be held at the finale of the conference to celebrate a young, promising academic that will be given a prize.
Welcome Ola, our new Policy Analyst, on board!
Ola Adach has joined OFE as a Policy Analyst this September. She’s coming to us with a track record in digital policy consulting in Brussels, having worked with major European and American tech players on issues related to cloud, cybersecurity, and privacy, among others. Her hands-on experience combined with her background in EU law equips her with a deep understanding of EU institutional dynamics and their legal underpinnings. She’s interested in all things open source, AI and platform economy – especially their interactions with competition law and human rights. Welcome to the team!

Join us at our event in Madrid on 16 November
On 16 November 2023, we will host an event with Red Hat, Linux Foundation Europe, TODO Group and Bitergia in Madrid, Spain as part of the Capital series focusing on the Member State that holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU.
In Madrid, we will bring EU and national policymakers together with businesses and organisations from the OSS ecosystem to shed light on the intersection between the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and OSS by providing a platform for critical discussions, insights, and solutions, as well as the current EU policy concerns on how to safeguard OSS and its benefits for innovation, strategic autonomy, EU competitiveness and security. One panel will be held fully in Spanish to gather local Spanish initiatives to discuss enabling vibrant open source communities in a dynamic private and third sector landscape.
We will have two keynote addresses, one on the CRA by Javier Augusto Gil-Ruiz Gil-Esparza, Advisory Member for Cybersecurity (Secretariat of State for Digitalisation and AI) at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation of Spain; and one on innovation in Spain by Juan Lobato Gandarias, Secretary GeneraI of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party of the Community of Madrid (PSOE-M).
