We are pleased to present you this report by our OpenForum Academy Fellow, Dr. Ian Brown.
The report looks in detail at the impact the EU’s new Digital Markets Act will have on encrypted messaging services from the very largest “gatekeeper” firms, such as Meta and Apple.
Services such as WhatsApp and iMessage are likely to be required to support interoperability of basic functionality with competitors and their users who wish to take advantage of it. So by mid-2024, for example, users of open source software such as Element should be able to send end-to-end encrypted messages to their friends and colleagues on those much larger services. The added competition this will bring should benefit *all* users of messaging software.
